Walaupun gajinya sebagai guru olahraga di sekolah tempat ia mengajar tidak sebanding dengan semangat dan kerja kerasnya, namun hal itu tidak membuat dia lelah dalam mengajarkan olahraga kepada murid-muridnya. Selaian pekerja keras ia seorang penyabar hal ini ia pernah buktikan ketika ia mencoba memperkenalkan frisbee disekolahnya yaitu SDN 011 Bukit Duri, pernah suatu hari pimpinan sekolahnya tidak mengizinkan dengan olahraga yang ia peragaan kepada murid-muridnya dalam hal ini frisbee, namun membuat ia tidak gentar hingga akhirnya pihak sekolahpun menyetujui niat baiknya itu yaitu memperkenalkan Frisbee. Menurut Pak edi, " Frisbee adalah olahraga yang tidak membosankan dan sangat menghibur terutama bagi anak-anak, ini bisa menjadi permainnan baru bagi mereka dan semua harus tahu untuk itu harus cari tahu.Pokoknya asyik deh! "

Tapi tahukah anda tentang olahraga Frisbee? Frisbee itu kalau istilah di Indonesianya yaitu piring terbang, tapi bukan piring yang terbang ketika kita melihat tetengga kiat sadang bertengkar. Namun piring terbang disini adalah salah satu jenis olah raga yang sangat menarik dan menggairahkan, dikarenakan di 1 team perempuan dan laki-laki menjadi satu merebutkan piring dengan cara bekerjasama hingga sampai di garis lawan dan mendapatkan poin satu. Olah raga ini sangat menjunjung nilai sportifitas yang sangat tinggi, sebab olahraga ini tidak ada wasit melainkan kesadaran dari para pemainnya itu sendiri. Bermain olahraga Frisbe pasti membuat anda tidak jemu dan semakin asyik bahkan tidak akan meninggalkan permainan, untuk itu selamat bermain, selamat belajar, selamat mencoba. Semangat !...semangat!..

As I live in Timor Leste now there's not a heck of a lot I can do for Klub Frisbee Jakarta anymore. Ardy's still working hard though.

He's got a job with the Jakarta Bintangs to promote Aussie rules footy to kids in and around Jakarta, but still uses frisbee as a teaching aid in other schools he visits and plays now and then with Discindo and the kids at the schools that we gave frisbees.

He's also learning how to use the internet and now has an email address and even a blog at http://ardyferdianto.blogspot.com/ so hopefully we'll see some updates soon.

It's been a hell of a ride and I've learnt a lot (hopefully some other people have too), but it's time for me to move on.

Hey again,

Sorry for the lack of action here in cyberspace, but, let me assure you, things never stop moving in Klub Frisbee Jakarta-land. We now have a modest clubhouse all decked out in frisbee propaganda set up in Kampung Melayu, Ardy has set up a jagung bakar (barbequed corn) stand and a nasi goreng (fried rice) stall to bring in some cash, Ardy and Soleh came to Bali to see what an international tournament is like, pick-up started again last Sunday, we've got our first visit to a university tomorrow, Ardy wants to set up a community micro-credit program based on handshake agreements, and I need to find time to write about it all!

So, plenty on our plate. Updates soon.

The final reckoning

Hi there,

First of all, my sincerest apologies for delaying this reconciliation for so long. I've had rather a lot on my plate, I suppose this is the sort of service you get when you donate to volunteers...

First off, some facts and figures. I received Rp. 5,030,000 (just over US$ 500) in cash donations for this effort and a lot more in in-kind donations (detailed below), most of which was used for emergency food and medical supplies. As I hinted at in earlier posts, our contact with Muslim Aid really came through with over Rp. 100 million in in-kind donations to help in the cleaning and reconstruction of the neighbourhood, especially the local school.

As you've seen from the previous updates (and as you will see from a few more coming soon) the neigbourhood is looking pretty good, Muslim Aid gave a whole lot of materials and the people reconstructed the collapsed section of the school roof, and while everything still has a bit of a brown tinge, it's all getting back to normal. Thanks again to everyone who donated, and, again, my apologies for taking so long to put up this reconciliation.

In addition to the cash donations we had quite a few people come through with in-kind donations. Clothes from B. Tillotson, M. Soemarjono, Arlan, T. Anderton (plus some notebooks and medical supplies); and indomie and frutang from E. Juliantini. Also special thanks to T. Brunskill and the Jakarta Bintangs Australian Football Club for coming all the way out to Kampung Melayu to take photos and bring some substantial amounts of food, clothes, medical supplies, water and goodwill to the flood victims.

The shoes and books were bought a few weeks after the floods when it looked like Muslim Aid had all of the emergency aid under control. Ardy got a great deal with the shoes and managed to get 50 pairs direct from the factory for Rp. 1.3 million to hand out to kids around the neighbourhood to protect their feet. The books I bought were English textbooks, but there will be a much more comprehensive post about that.

The Klub Frisbee Jakarta / Sanggar Alam Kita POSKO

I was watching a movie on Saturday night and got an sms from Ardy that the floodwaters had risen over a metre again. I was surprised because we'd been having heavy rain for days and it didn't seem to have much of an effect... The rain on Saturday, while heavy, seemed comparatively short. I got some more donations of noodles and Frutang from Tini, notepads from Trish, clothes from Arlan and a huge box of clothes from Barb so I figured I should probably head out and check it out while bringing out the donations.

The kids were trying to convince me to sit on a piece of styrofoam and have a tour of the flooded area...

I felt a little bad having so many people pushing me around, but they didn't seem to mind the water at all... When Uji started spraying it out of his mouth I began to get a little worried though...

The Klub Frisbee Jakarta / Sanggar Alam Kita clubhouse which is actually housing a lot of the displaced kids and their families at the moment. It flooded on Saturday night, but the water receded again soon enough.

Poncol Visit: Sunday, 11th February 2007

The contents of people's houses: completely destroyed.

Disclaimer: My apologies, the video's aren't subtitled yet. I'm super busy at work and probably don't even have time to be posting this now... I'll hopefully get them subtitled this week sometime. I figured the important thing was to get them online and seen by as many people as possible. I may well edit them all together and subtitle them properly, but the odds of that happening in the next few weeks are slim... (Anyone else want to do it for me? Yes, I'm looking in your direction Jakartaguy...) Also, sorry about the poor interviewing technique... Cold interviewing is hard, man, and I couldn't be bothered editing out my more tactless questions right now.

We were lucky enough to hook up with Muslim Aid the previous day and were able to show them some of the photos that Ardy and Rian (the head of Sanggar Alam Kita, the sister theatre club to Klub Frisbee Jakarta) took, and they agreed to help out to the tune of around Rp. 70 million (I haven’t got the final reckoning yet, but that’s a ballpark)! So, bright and early, Ardy and I went and met Mas Nano to head out to Kampung Melayu.

As we drove in, they had dozens of trucks lined up to collect mud and rubbish, they also had the fire department out with high pressure hoses firing detergent and water onto the road to clean it off.

When we arrived, I was a little worried that people had been cleaning too well and there was nowhere left for us to help. I’d been talking up how devastated the neighbourhood was all of the previous day and they had allocated us all of this money. We were walking through streets that had been chest high in water only a week before and they looked fine… Roads were clean, gutters were cleaned out and mattresses were drying on fences (whether or not they can dry out fast enough not to cause respiratory infections is dubious). As we walked further we began to see signs of the mud. Gutters were totally clogged and people were clearing them out into sacks that were carried out to the road in gerobak.

As I walked down the street towards the local school, SMP Perguruan Rakyat II, the mud got thicker and thicker. Soon enough we were wading through ankle high, thick, stinking mud stepping over the destroyed contents of people’s houses that had been discarded onto the path. Soon enough we reached the school:

I also ran into some parents of members of Klub Frisbee Jakarta, so I thought I’d have a chat to them. All of the Discindo players will know who Sugi is, despite being 13 years old, he is probably the best player out of all of them (but still needs to learn not to poach on defence). Here is his mother:

I wanted to head down to the river to see the houses that most of the Klub Frisbee Jakarta members live in (including the house that Ardy’s mother, brothers and sisters live in that had a wall collapse last week), but the mud was still knee high so I thought better of it and turned back at the Sanggar Alam Kita house.

On the walk back to the car we decided the best use of the funds would be to buy some high pressure hoses and pumps to help the cleaning process, and spend some money on emergency supplies (which are still needed). Ardy and Mas Nano (from Muslim Aid) went off to shop around for the supplies, while I stayed at the POSKO to avoid bule tax and receive other donations.

While this was going on, the KFJ members and I decided that the best use of Rp. 700,000 of the remaining Rp. 900,000 in donations from Discindo and some individual donations I had received would be to spend it on a nutritious lunch of Nasi Bungkus for the people working to clear out the mud down in the worst affected areas. Aming went off with the money and came back with 130 packed lunches just as Rob and Jason from the Jakarta Bintangs Australian Football Club showed up with around Rp. 2 million worth of medical and cleaning supplies.

I took a little more footage of the school while I was down there… They had made some progress on the library, but there’s a long way to go.

After a quick trip down to Senayan with 6 KFJ members in the back of the taxi (Sugi’s learning to throw inside-outs, and outside-ins, but still needs some practice), we turned up only 15 minutes before the Regional Director of Muslim Aid, Fadhulah Wilmot, and his entourage turned up with the truck full of supplies. Ardy and Nano bought two high pressure pumps (cost is coming soon), and spent Rp. 10 million on emergency supplies including food, medicines, and, crucially, rubber boots, rakes, and other tools to help clean up.

In the time it took us to walk down to the school, both pumps were already working hard and the community members were making good progress on their clean up effort. There’s a lot of work left though…

After I heard that the fire department was mixing disinfectant in the water they were spraying I did worry for a little while about the trouble we might be causing by spraying down the houses with river water. On balance though, I think benefit that the people get from getting the mud out of their houses outweights the possible health risks of spraying the polluted river water around. At least I hope so…

Even when the water was at its highest, and I was seeing families being saved from their houses in rubber rafts, I didn’t really understand the scale of the disaster facing families in flooding affected areas of Jakarta. I must admit, I haven’t seen all of the affected areas, but I can’t imagine how much worse they could be than Poncol in Kampung Melayu. The neighbourhood is located right next to Kali Ciliwung and gets hit every flooding season, but everyone agreed that this was as bad as they had ever seen it.

Muslim Aid is very generously channelling quite a bit of funding towards Poncol in Kampung Melayu, although I haven’t got all of the details yet; and while Rp. 70 million is probably more than the combined income of the citizenry of the entire area behind SMP PR II, it still pales in comparison to what they lost. The entire contents of everyone’s houses have been completely destroyed or washed away. If anyone has any donations of clothes, books, sporting equipment, household items, etc., etc., etc. that they can spare, then let us know and we’ll send it to Kampung Melayu.

I’ll keep updating on the progress with Muslim Aid, and I’ll have a reconciliation up here soon on who donated what (just initials) and where it went.

You may want to compare how the school looks in the above videos to how it looked in August last year. Also, keep an eye out for photos of Ardy, Pak Yadi, Jaya, Aming, Uji, Sugi, Caplang, Desti, and a whole lot more. Happier times…

We received an extra Rp. 1.25 million in pledges so last night I went and bought some more supplies and Ardy came out to my place last night on a motorbike to pick up donations. I only ended up spending Rp. 465,000 because that was all that would fit on the motorbike, so we still have some more thinking to do.

In fact, Ardy said that there were still some shortages of food, so the total haul last night was 1 box of instant noodles, 40 packets of biscuits, 8 x 50 packets of sanitary pads, and 10 tubs of antiseptic towelettes. We also got some extra in-kind donations of new clothes, and more sanitary pads.

Apparently the water has all subsided now, but people are still homeless as there is a foot of mud (filled with rubbish) caking the floors of their homes. Mattresses, clothes, school uniforms, books, furniture, (the list goes on) are all destroyed.

We had a whole lot more rain last night, but the water doesn't seem to have risen much, while people still need everything they needed over the past week, they now also need shovels, gumboots, wheelbarrows, and equipment to clean out their houses... I think we're going to need help from an NGO for this... Any takers? I spoke to someone from an NGO that I met in Jogja after the earthquake last year, so we'll see if anything materialises...

Weird, deja vu...

Unfortunately, the house of our property steward, Aming, was completely flooded, and chances are all of our discs have been washed away. We'll see what we can salvage, but the water is actually flowing pretty fast and I'd be very surprised if they're not halfway to Singapore by now.

Coincidentally, Discindo is sending a whole bunch of people to the Bangkok Hat tournament this weekend, so if you're planning on going we would really appreciate it if you could bring any old crappy practice discs that you have lying around the place and drop them in to Andrew W, Manoah, Boom, Treena, Barb T, Jeff C, Cindy M, and probably a few more. Everyone's favourite Filipino: Lester from Vietnam will be coming our way soon as well, so feel free to drop them in to him as well.

Quick update

Despite raining all of last night, it seems as though the waters haven't risen, although they haven't really subsided either. No one has moved back home yet, and Deni's grandmother is still stranded...

Food needs seem to be covered for the time being, and free health clinics are taking care of most of the health problems that people are encountering. Ardy feels that the number one priority now is still clothes and blankets. People literally ran out of their houses with nothing more than the clothes on their backs and after swimming through the floodwaters and then sleeping in those clothes for 5 days straight (and counting) skin ailments are starting to cause trouble. There is also still a shortage of women's sanitary products, bandages, and wound cleaning solution.

Kampung Melayu Floods

Despite the fact that it had been flooded since Thursday night and it was Sunday when we visited, some people were still being rescued from their houses in rubber rafts. Apparently this family had been forced to drink the flood waters while waiting for rescue.

For those that have just joined us, Jakarta has been receiving enormous amounts of rain over the last few days, newspapers around the world are reporting figures of 60-70% of Jakarta being flooded, with 40cm (almost a foot and a half) of rain having fallen on Thursday night/Friday morning alone. The worst hit area of Jakarta is Kampung Melayu, and the worst hit neighbourhood in Kampung Melayu just happens to be Poncol, where most of the core members of KFJ reside.

The field Discindo plays on on Sunday afternoons tends to turn to a big swamp if there's even a little bit of rain, let alone the torrential downpours that we've been having over the last few days. With this in mind, Discindo felt that it was better to use the money that we normally paid for the field in Senayan to buy emergency supplies for the families affected by the severe flooding in Kampung Melayu; in addition to this, pledges from a few generous members brought the total donated up to Rp. 2.1 million (around US$200)

Rp. 2.1 million may not seem like a lot of money, and its not compared to the scale of the disaster, but you can buy a surprising amount of stuff for it. In fact, our main concern was how to get the most value for the victims that would still fit in a taxi. We ended up spending Rp. 700,000 on basic medical supplies, Rp. 200,000 food, and the rest in cash donations to be used as Ardy and the kids that I gave it to felt best.

The medical supplies we gave included

13 bottles of betadine, 4 bottles of antiseptic solution, cotton wool, plasters, and q-tips for cleaning wounds;
A few hundred sachets of Pharolit (rehydration salts for diarrhea), a few hundred blister packs of Diapet (over-the-counter diarrhea medication);
16 tubes of Autan (mosquito repellent);
10 packs of sanitary pads; and
a few hundred blister packs of generic paracetamol tablets to reduce fever.

We would have bought much more of a lot of those things (sanitary pads, and Pharolit in particular), but it was a relatively small chemist and we cleared them out.

The stuff we gave was really just basic hygiene stuff, although, in these situations, the local knowledge of these sorts of things is really less than satisfactory. When I was telling the kids to go and get any wound cleaned up, no matter how small, because the water was absolutely filthy and they could get horrible infections, they all proudly showed me their open sores that they had been swimming around in the water with for the past 3 days. Also, for those not keeping up with the local news at the moment, the newspapers in the weeks leading up to this flooding had been filled with stories of outbreaks of Dengue Fever. With all this standing water around, people going hungry and lacking sleep immune systems are going to be low so we thought the medical supplies would be the best way to go.

So, I loaded up the car, picked up a few donated t-shirts (lots of people are cold and wet) and Howie and Haviva, and headed off to Kampung Melayu.

We arrived at around 5pm and were followed not long after by Tamara and Chris, dabblers in Discindo who answered the call and brought a carload of supplies including big boxes of water, instant noodles, biscuits, and bags and bags of old clothes. After unloading the supplies we took up the invitation to have a wander around the neighbourhood to see what we could see.

Over lunch I had maintained that there was no way I was going to set foot in that filthy water, but it soon became obvious that we weren't going to see very much unless we took the plunge, so we rolled up out pant legs and waded in. Here are some of the photos:

I had thought that the Town Hall I had visited on Friday night was the extent of the refugee problem in Kampung Melayu, but it soon became obvious that it was much, much larger than that... The below is some video footage of the mosque just east of Tebet train station. It's packed, and most of the Klub Frisbee Jakarta kids have been staying here for 3-4 days. Sugi, Desti, Soleh, Ardy's younger brother and all of their families to name but a few.

Deni is staying in the mosque alone at the moment because his grandmother and younger siblings are still stranded in their house, the alley is too narrow for the rubber boats to pass.

As you can see from the photo above, surprisingly, people seem to be in relatively good spirits, in fact, the kids seem to be enjoying the time off school and living in one big room with all of their friends. We'll see how they go in the coming days. Ardy said that while the waters normally take 3-4 days to subside, families can take as long as 2 weeks to get back to work as they clean out their houses. As I mentioned in a previous post, the school is completely submerged along with all of the schoolbooks, teachers' records and so on. It will be a while until things are back to normal...

Sorry for the radio silence, pick-up has been happening in either Klender or Cawang, but there haven't been school visits for the last few weeks because I've been busy, Ardy and the kids from Kampung Melayu (the core group) have had a theatre performance, I've been busy, and Jakarta has been hit by the worst floods in 5 years and Kampung Melayu is under (literally) 8 feet of water, respectively.

SMP Perguruan Rakyat II, the school that some loyal readers may remember from the Poncol Cup, is underwater... The whole thing! I went with Ardy, Soleh and Aming to see it last night but we couldn't get close enough and someone else was using the inflatable raft that someone had donated. I might get another chance to get out there tomorrow before Discindo training and I'll see if I can get some photos.

There are literally tens of thousands of people displaced by the flooding and torrential rain but, for the most part, they seem to be taking it pretty well. As I walked through the darkened streets of Poncol at about 11pm last night (the power is out, quite a few of the deaths that occur in these situations are from electrocution, though they are dwarfed by the threat of diarrhea) all of the neighbourhood men and boys were out and about sitting around kerosene lanterns and playing guitar or chatting. The women (who were mostly asleep) didn't seem quite so blasé about it though... I just poked my head into the town hall (the mosque, where people would normally sleep is mostly underwater too) and there were around 40 mothers and children curled up on mats on the stone floor packed in like sardines trying to get to sleep.

What a lot of people don't realise about these sorts of short-term, relatively frequently occuring emergency situations is how many productive hours are lost in the weeks following (and even lives threatened) by all of the illness caused. Also, calling the water "water" is possibly misleading; a decent percentage of it is human effluent and there's truckload after truckload of rubbish. When people are wading and, in some cases, swimming through this to try to salvage belongings from their houses you've got a serious threat of infection from cuts and ingestion of the water.

A few Discindo members have donated some clothes and blankets to keep people warm and dry, but we'll see what we can collect tomorrow at training.

I'm of two minds at the moment as to how we can best deploy our limited resources. I was considering giving Ardy money to bring the kids down to Senayan to play ultimate with us to get them out of their parents hair and take their minds off the flooding, but most of the regular players should probably be helping their parents salvage stuff anyway... I suppose it would be better spent on electrolyte replacement drinks, clean water, and biscuits...

We'll see how it goes...

The mini hat tournament with Klub Frisbee Jakarta and Discindo went well with *ahem* Samsara (my team) dominating and taking out the top honours. I picked an exceptionally bad weekend to have it as it seemed like half of Discindo was out of town, and we only had three teams, but everyone had fun and the Jakarta Post published this article about it (we'll see how long the hyperlink works...).

Hat Tournament: Sunday January 21, 2007

Discindo is holding a mini hat tournament this Sunday and has invited 16 of the best kids from Klub Frisbee Jakarta to come and join in. The kids are all very excited and Ardy has given me the list already. He has also given me a list of 30 kids who want to come down and watch, so we've used the money that would have been used for the field this week to subsidise the bus fares down to Senayan.

When Ardy told me the school for this week was in Bekasi, I knew it was relatively far. When Manoah and I hopped in the taxi, however, I didn't fully comprehend the 2 hour journey we were in for.

As the journey dragged on, we started talking about how it was a waste of time to come so far because they're never going to be able to come out to the field we've rented, we're never going to have time to come back, we don't have enough discs to give them any, we need to pick our investments of time, and so on and so on. By the time we reached Sekolah Jaya Sutia Abadi, we were hot, cranky, covered in road dust (due to the 2 traffic jams we had to get out of our taxi, and then bus and walk past) and in no mood to run a school visit.

As soon as we met the students, everything changed. I had always assumed that the further out of Jakarta you got, the worse their English was, but in fact we were able to run almost the entire class in (slow) English. The students were attentive, and seemed genuinely excited about the possibility of teaching this new game to their friends.

At every other school we have visited we have had to physically drag the kids on to the ashphalt and push them into two lines to start teaching them to throw but. before I knew it, both boys and girls were out there throwing backhands and flicks like a bunch of pros.

The game was good fun with only minimal refereeing required and the kids seemed to have a great time. Oh, and in case you were wondering, Manoah's team was utterly decimated.

Up until this school visit, we had never really expected that the schools could be expected to develop as little islands of ultimate in their own right, but somehow this school seemed different. We ended up leaving two discs with them, and had a long discussion with the sport teacher, principal, vice principal and a few other teachers about the role we see them playing in the future development of ultimate in Indonesia.

We told them to keep in touch via email and via the comments on this website, and if they are making good progress we'll go back. Exciting stuff, we'll see how it turns out...

Another interesting development is the extra interest that Soleh has been showing in the past few weeks. He came along on this school visit, and it sounds like he'll be coming on a few more.

School Visits Saturday December 16, 2006

This week we visited two SMKs (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan - Technical High School). SMK teach management, accounting and other general business skills. Interestingly, these schools are attended almost exclusively by girls. There were allegedly 4 boys at the first school, and only one at the second.

The first school (the name of which I will insert into this article very soon) was a little further out of Jakarta than those we had visited before and the majority of the girls were wearing jilbabs (head-scarves) so we weren't sure how sport lessons with big sweaty white men would go down (Liz being the notable exception). It soon became obvious that there was no need to worry and we played for a good half-hour with well over 100 spectators cheering the players on.

Soon enough it was time to head back to our old favourite Sekolah Harapan I to teach their SMK students a thing or two about ultimate. This was the first school we had been to with a female sports teacher and it really seemed to make a difference in how easy it was to get the girls to take the first step out on to the field.

Pick-Up December 10

Had another good turn-out this week, though there was only one kid I recognised from SMU Harapan I (Sukri, see below for his profile).

They were running a four-corners (throwing and cutting) drill when we turned up at 5pm. We joined in with them for a while, then set up two fields and had a game of 7 on 7 and a smaller game of 4 on 4 until we ran out of daylight. The kids were doing very well, but it's definitely time to start getting some discipline on defense and teach them to force properly.

SMU Harapan I visit

On Saturday Manoah, Ardy and I made our way back to Sekolah Harapan I to see the Senior High School (SMU) kids. The older kids were substantially better behaved than their younger brothers and sisters, but were actually a little harder to get out on to the field. Teenagers...

Once we got them out on the field we had a good game although it was rather male dominated, having the feminine touch of Liz last week made a big difference. So much so, that in fact the SMP girls from last week hung around until the end of the game with the older kids to have another game. Melinda was nowhere to be seen though...

Tomorrow will be our last visit to Sekolah Harapan I to teach their technical school students. We'll be leaving from Taman Rasuna at 1pm for all those who couldn't handle the 9am starts from previous weeks.

The Inaugural Lapangan Prumnas Klender Weekly Pick-Up Game

We had our first of what will hopefully turn out to be many pick-up games on Sunday afternoon, and it was absolutely heartwarmingly fantastic. Unfortunately the time slot clashes with Discindo training in Senayan so I was almost 3 hours late. Apparently around 10 kids from the school we visited the previous day (see below) had gone home just before I arrived, but there were still around 25 kids there throwing discs around. Most of the leftovers were from Kampung Melayu (aka Jakarta's frisbee heartland) but there were still around 7 from the general neighbourhood.

We had a few games, one with some of the older kids, and one with the younger ones. Play is getting quite fluid with the older kids; they seem to have picked up the give-and-go instinctively and the flow is good. Defence is still somewhat erratic, but the stacks are normally so disorganised that it doesn't really matter too much. That will be the first lesson next week.

In terms of management issues, Ardy did a spectacular job of keeping the whole show running with help from some of the Kampung Melayu students. I am starting to think that we should give him a raise, considering the time he puts in every week what a good job he's doing and lots of other reasons that I will detail in a separate post.

The kids did a great job keeping track of our stock of donated discs (Thanks to Manoah, Liz and Boom for collecting them, and everyone at Worlds and the Manila Spirits who donated them) and we only lost one disc. That loss was to the 6 year old son of the caretaker of the stadium showed such promise and enthusiasm that the KFJ committee unanimously decided to give him one on the proviso that he keep coming to training (not hard since he lives there).

The one downer, well, not so much a downer as something to improve on next week, was that there was only one girl there. Desti from Kampung Melayu (who also took some of the photos you'll see below) is a great handler and does a great job on the field, but I'm sure it's hard as the only one. I'm hoping we'll see some more next week.

I asked the kids as we were packing up what they thought of the field and the day's play. The time is a bit of an issue, they'd much prefer to play in the morning, but when I asked them if they wanted to get the same slot next week the answer was an emphatic (and shouted) yes.

If anyone wants to come and teach (or learn) next week, then drop us a line below and we'll work something out. Also, if anyone who has a decent camera (still or video) wants to come it would be much appreciated.

Melinda was far and away the best player we saw at SMP Harapan I. She wasn't much for talking and seemed a little embarrassed when I interviewed her and took her photo, but on the field she cut into space like a pro and did a great job coordinating her classmates (including the boys) on the field.

SMP Harapan I Visit

We had a very productive visit to SMP Harapan I on Saturday morning. Ardy and I were joined by Indonesia's very own World Champion mixed ultimate player Liz. Having a woman come along made a huge difference to how outgoing the female students were; in fact, we had a few points at the end with only girls because they all wanted to have a go.

You may note from the photo above that the name of the school is actually SMP SMA SMEA Harapan I. Due to space requirements, apparently this school runs in shifts and is a junior high school (Sekolah Menengah Pertama - SMP), senior high school (Sekolah Menengah Atas), and a technical high school (Sekolah Menengah E-something Atas). We may well visit this school again next week to show the SMA students what their little brothers and sister are talking about.

A Field!

Ladies and gentlemen,

We have a field.

The field itself is Lapangan Prumnas Klender in East Jakarta, and we have it for 4 hours on a Sunday afternoon from 2pm until 6pm for Rp. 150,000 (Not Rp. 100,000 for 2 hours as I said on the video...).

The timing is a little unfortunate as it overlaps with Discindo training, but it was the only timeslot we were able to find on a field in Jakarta on a Sunday. We could find slots on Saturday but, unfortunately, most kids actually have school on Saturdays and encouraging them to skip school is exactly what we don't want to do. The location is much better for them as well.

The field itself has pretty bad grass coverage, but it is pretty spacious and has a cool set of stands for spectators for future tournaments.

Sekolah Al-Karomiah

Last Saturday the 26th of November, Ardy and I visited Sekolah Al-Karomiah in Jatinegara, East Jakarta to introduce the students to ultimate, and invite them along to next week's kick-off pick-up game at Lapangan Prumnas Klender.

The students responded well, and in an intra-class game Team Bukan Scorpion overcame their worthy rivals Team Scorpion 5-4.

What's Going On?

Some of you may be wondering what has been going on with KFJ since the tournament. And fair enough, it was in August...

Well, while there has been all sorts of administrative stuff going on (the details of which I won't bore you with until we have completed them) the fasting month of Lebaran put a bit of a hole in our actual disc playing a clinic-running, but we're back up now.

From now on, every Saturday morning we will be running a clinic or two at different schools around Jakarta (last week was only one school because making it to the first one meant I would have had to get out of bed at 6am). For photos of our trip to Sekolah Al-Karomiah last week, see the next post which will follow shortly.

So exciting that I can't believe I waited until the fourth paragraph to write about it is the fact that we now have a field! It's, um, a little far for those of us who live in South Jakarta, but it's perfect for the kids. For more info, see the post about the fields which will follow the post about Al-Karomiah shortly.

Hey hey!

We had our first *real* publicity on Monday morning with over half a page devoted to covering the Poncol Cup in that fine Jakarta broadsheet, the Jakarta Post (with a circulation of around 40,000!). Unfortunately none of the kids speak English well enough to understand the article (we're working on that though) but they're pretty stoked about the pictures.

One drawback of getting so much space in a paper is that it can't actually fit in a scanner so that I can put it up here to brag about it. I'll get my camera back of Ardy soon and we'll get it up here in some form or another.

In the meantime, you'll have to settle for this.*

*Despite having a circulation of around 40,000, for some reason the Jakarta Post doesn't host articles on its main pages for more than a day, so permalinks there would be a waste of time...

Priority 1: Discs

Ultimate fever has swept through Poncol (a small neighbourhood in Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta) but we want to expand. Would we like a field of our own? Hell yeah... But before we get that, we actually need to get the equipment.

Ultimate is often promoted as an egalitarian sport because all you need to play is a disc, a place to run around, and some people. Unfortunately for those of us who live in places like Indonesia though, discs that you can actually play ultimate with are a little hard to come by.

There is no real limit to the number of discs we need, the more we get, the more we can expand. The hardest working man in Indonesian ultimate, Ardy Ferdianto, has a huge network of schoolteachers from his time as a school drama teacher so the plan is to run a series of clinics for sports teachers throughout Jakarta and to give them all a disc. They can train the kids during PE class, and once we get a field, interested kids can come and play pick-up every Sunday morning at a central location (yet to be finally decided). The development of each school's ultimate program will be overseen by Ardy.

Fortunately for us, the World Ultimate Club Championships are coming up next week. So if you're going to Perth and you've got a disc you don't need anymore, don't just let it gather dust, send it our way. How will you send it our way you ask?

The Poncol Cup - Day 2

On the second day of competition, the four teams and a few spectators made the hour-and-a-half bus trip down to Discindo's spiritual home, Lapangan Panahan (the Archery Field) in Gelora Bung Karno Senayan, to play in the final rounds of the Poncol Cup.

As in the previous week's play, Ketupat's combination of age, size, strength and athleticism served them well and they took out the top prize, a brand new professional standard frisbee donated by Discindo. In fact, all of the top four teams got a brand new disc, but Ketupat gets bragging rights, and that's all that matters really.

The Poncol Cup - Day 1

In late July 2006, Ardy came to some members of Discindo with an idea for a tournament. It sounded rather optimistic. A 12 team tournament, 2 months after the kids had thrown their first disc?

Ardy had been able to raise half of the budget from the local neighbourhood association, and with a little help from a few generous Discindo members, the tournament could go ahead.

There were over 70 participants in the tournament, though these things are hard to keep track of as rosters kept changing throughout the day when random passers by thought it didn't look too hard.

Pak Yadi, a local motorcycle taxi driver, decides to try and help out Bad Fresh in their quarter final against Crazy in the second half. Under his leadership Bad Fresh dropped their halftime lead of 6-4 and ended up losing 8-11.

The concrete field - complete with a foot high concrete step marking the front end of one end zone (visible in the first picture above) - did pose some challenges, but thankfully all participants seemed to have a sixth sense for it and serious injuries were avoided.

The tournament was played over two weekends, with the first day's play eliminating Somplak, Menanam, Bulldog, Baut, Bad Fresh, Tukang, Lazy, Batik, Obeng, Dazar and Censeiyar, with Stupid, Crazy, Ketupat and Kancil rising to the top to compete in the semi finals to be held the following weekend on Discindo's regular field in Senayan.

The First Clinic

After a series of chance meetings with Discindo members, actor and drama teacher (and now sporting coach) Ardy Ferdianto decided he would come and find out about this strange sport that he kept hearing about. He was hooked, and began preaching the gospel to his students.

In May 2006 Discindo ran a clinic for kids from a small neighbourhood called Poncol before their Sunday training at Lapangan Panahan in Senayan. Around 40 kids turned up, learnt how to throw, how to catch and the basic rules of the game, Discindo gave them some old practice discs and off they went home.

Little did the members of Discindo know the revolution that was about to take place.

Despite the fact that the concrete field at the neighbourhood junior high school was not much larger than a badminton court, and the front end of one of the end zones was marked by a foot high concrete step, the kids began to p ractice on their own and started taking the hour and a half long bus ride to come to Senayan (where Discindo trains) once or twice a week.

Welcome to the illustrious first posting on the Klub Frisbee Jakarta blog. This blog was set up to let the rest of the world how ultimate frisbee is developing in Jakarta and (hopefully soon) the rest of Indonesia.

For those of you who haven't heard of ultimate before, check out the very informative Wikipedia article.

Ultimate has been played in Indonesia now for over a decade with twice-weekly pick-up games in Jakarta and an annual tournament in Bali put on by Discindo. Discindo's membership hovers between 25-40% local players with the rest being made up of mainly American and Canadian expatriates; the odd Australian, Filipino, Japanese or random European player has been known to suit up in the Red and White and show them all how to play the ultimate sport.

Recently though, a new force has started to move in Indonesian ultimate, but to find out about that, you'd better read the next post.
